Tine misalignment

One tine higher than the other — the classic scratch.

When one tine sits higher than the other, the low corner of the tipping digs into paper on side strokes: scratch in one direction, smooth in the other. It ships from factories more often than anyone would like and happens in drops and pocket carries constantly.

A loupe and thumbnail pressure fix most cases in five minutes. It is the first thing to check on any scratchy pen — before blaming the nib size, the ink, or yourself.
