Editorial standards
The pen world’s rankers are mostly stores ranking their own shelves. We aren’t a store. Here is exactly how that independence works — and how we pay the bills without renting our verdicts.
We hold no stock
Piston Fill sells no pens, no ink, and no paper. We have no inventory to move, no distributor relationships to protect, and no reason to push a mediocre pen because it’s the one in the warehouse. When we say a $7 Preppy beats a pen at ten times the price for a given writer, nothing on our side of the table changes if you buy neither.
How we make money — disclosed, every time
Two ways. First, affiliate links: when we point you to a pen on Amazon, that link may earn us a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we may earn a commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never changes a verdict — the commission is identical whether we rank a pen first or last, so there’s no incentive to inflate. Second, we sell our own original designs in the shop — nib-anatomy plates and ink-swatch charts drawn in-house, made to order.
Reviews and revenue stay separate
Rankings are built from the testing protocol, not from commission rates. A pen with no affiliate program can still top a roundup; a high-paying one can still finish last or be left off entirely. We do not accept payment for placement, and we do not accept free products in exchange for coverage.
Honest expertise, honestly framed
The fountain-pen hobby issues no certifications, and we invent none. Our editors are researchers who apply a consistent protocol and synthesize community consensus — they are not presented as decades-deep master penmen, because that would be a fiction. Where something is judgment, we label it judgment.
We name real products — and flag real risks
Naming brands and models in reviews and comparisons is how you make a useful recommendation. On higher-end pens, third-party listings and counterfeits exist; we flag when a listing warrants extra care and steer toward reputable sellers.
Corrections
We get things wrong sometimes — a price moves, a model revises, a nib runs differently than reported. When it happens we fix it in the open and note material changes. Found something off? Tell us and we’ll make it right.
