The smear problem is a dry-time problem — and dry time is a spec we measure.

Lefties divide into underwriters (hand below the line — usually no problem at all), side-writers, and overwriters (hand hooks above and trails through fresh ink). If you overwrite, your enemy is seconds-to-dry, and every choice below shortens it.

Finer nibs put down less ink; drier inks set faster; absorbent-but-coated paper splits the difference. A left-handed overwriter with a Japanese F and a quick-dry ink smears nothing.
