Dye ink
The standard, fully dissolved fountain-pen ink.
Dye inks dissolve colorant completely in water — the default chemistry of nearly every bottle on the shelf. They flow beautifully, clean out with plain water, and come in thousands of colors with every property from sheen to shading.
The trade is permanence: most dye inks smear or wash under water. For envelopes and checks, reach for a pigment or "bulletproof" formula instead.
